Best solo 401k provider?

We’re moving my wife’s account to Schwab since we already have our joint account there. The only thing I’m not fond of at Schwab is the need to send paper checks.

Fidelity also has great options. If you're thinking about consolidating your assets, I’d probably suggest Fidelity. They’re the only one with an HSA option, and their sweep accounts are nearly on par with Vanguard (just a few basis points difference). Their customer service and ATM/debit card offerings are similar to Schwab's. Overall, Fidelity combines the best features from other companies with very few downsides.

They charge fees, including a 1% fee for crypto transactions!
Ah, I was pointing out that there are no AUM fees, just a flat subscription rate. This means that no matter how much you invest or how much it grows, you’re not charged a percentage. For crypto, I believe you’re referring to the transaction fees, but they’re similar to what other providers charge.

I set up my Solo 401K almost ten years ago with Schwab. Back then, they were one of the few providers offering it, and their options were great. I’m still with them today.

I discovered that Solera only allows wire transfers to a crypto exchange, and each one costs $30.
Any custodian will charge fees like these. For some people, especially those planning to invest small amounts regularly, the cost might be too high.

I use Etrade, but setting it up can be a bit frustrating. If that's a hassle, you might want to check out Vanguard, though I'm not really familiar with how their setup works.

I realize I wasn't very clear about the Self-Directed option. To clarify, I don't believe Etrade offers a Self-Directed account, although they do have a Solo 401k option.

Are you thinking about investing in things like real estate with your Solo 401k?

I've had a self-directed 401k for almost 20 years, mainly investing in trust deeds. I'm not satisfied with my current provider, though, and I'm curious about what other options are available.

Setting up Vanguard was pretty simple, but they're getting out of the Solo 401k business and handing it over to Ascensus.
